General Information
History, War Documentary hosted by Patrick Allen and published by Others in 2005 - English narration
Information
As US troops were committed in ever-increasing numbers in the 1960s to protect South Vietnam from Communist takeover, it became clear they faced a double enemy in the Vietcong and the inhospitable South-east Asian terrain. The helicopter turned the tide, revolutionising the face of warfare at a stroke and laying down a blueprint for the future.
Air mobility was a the watchword as the war ebbed and flowed, the helicopters vulnerability to ground fire at take-off and landing, combated by gunship escorts which laid down a withering field of fire. Flying from forward bases, the helicopter took the war to an elusive enemy and proved a key element in a campaign where every victory was hard-won.
The war may ultimately have been lost, but the air cavalry concept remains a key military strategy today. With much previously-classified film footage from both ground and air, this video examines the integral role played by the helicopter.
