The Will Of Victory is footage from the Russian archives of World War 2 which immerses us into the extraordinary, never before seen images of the Nazi invasion, occupation and finally retreat from Russia without the benefit of Language. The film is a sequence of colored documentary footage of Second World War scenes shot at both Russian and German sides of the lines. Emotional and astonishingly unique, the footage (now in color) paints a startling look at the horrors of war, endurance, and power of human resilience. The opening onslaughts of Operation Barbarossa began on June 22nd, 1941, as German forces stormed into the Soviet Union. Three million German troops are supported by Italian, Hungarian, Romanian and Finnish allies. Stalin is taken by surprise and the Soviets are forced to retreat. The invaders are accompanied by SS teams, who round up and kill hundreds of thousands of Jews. The conquest and enslavement of the Soviet Union's racially 'inferior' Slavic populations would be part of a grand plan of 'Germanisation' and economic exploitation lasting well beyond the expected military victory. But the plan eventually failed. Perhaps the most important reason of all for the defeat of Operation 'Barbarossa' was the tenacious resistance of the defenders. The Germans completely underestimated the Soviet will to fight. The ordinary Soviets―civilians and soldiers―were sucked into a bitter conflict that marked their lives forever. Their struggle for survival, and their resistance to the invaders' brutality in the occupied territories, is one of the great untold stories of the war. No nation suffered more losses during the Second World War than the Soviet Union. The figure most historians recognize as roughly accurate is twenty million. The Will Of Victory is unique, very emotionally disturbing, restored footage from 1939-1945, which was never shown before on the big screen. See with your own eyes the will of our compatriots, that brought us victory and freedom. The Will Of Victory A Doc Opera is proof that 'the reality' is stronger than fiction if approached with imagination. It shows us real images but tell us a very powerful visual imaginary story that builds up and makes you feel that you're there. That's the power of the film. The impact is very emotional. Also the fact that we only chose color images gave the film a consistency that this generation hasn't seen. We treated the images to feel like dailies just shot yesterday. The Second World War is so embedded in our brain as B&W that The Will Of Victory makes us feel that it has happened during our life instead of before. Almost all the images that we saw of this time were in B&W, which made us, the ones who were born afterwards see the WAR always as something of our parents. Growing up we were and wanted to be detached from it. Now after 60 years we are thrown back into the 'real' thing, by approaching the real images with so much imagination, no dialog and no narration.
